Weddell Sea & Antarctic Peninsula 12-13
This Peregrine journey takes us to one of the world’s most awe-inspiring destinations. After making shore visits on our way through the South Shetland Islands we arrive at the Antarctic Peninsula, on the continent of Antarctica, to be immediately dazzled by perhaps the most dramatic scenery to be found anywhere on earth. Sailing aboard our well-appointed expedition vessel, we witness Antarctic nature in all its glory. These areas boast an extraordinary abundance of wildlife, including five species of seals and massive rookeries of gentoo, Adélie and chinstrap penguins as well as a profusion of seabirds ranging from albatross to skuas. Another wildlife highlight may well be observing a variety of magnificent whales in close proximity as they crest the surface of the waves.
On the 'White Continent', we also see remarkable landscapes of ice. At Paradise Harbour or Hope Bay we find many icebergs dotting the waters, including some that are colossal in size, containing natural caves that are shrouded in eerie translucent light. On land there is a sweeping ice sheet, masking mountains, filling trenches and binding together an entire continent that is about the size of Africa. Travelling in the company of our experienced expedition crew, some of whom have travelled to Antarctica over 100 times, it still seems astonishing as we reflect on the exploits of the early explorers as they attempted to conquer this beautiful and yet formidable land.
Having worked our way northwards we will be well situated to begin our passage through the Antarctic Sound. This stretch of water separates the western side of the Peninsula from the Weddell Sea. Have your cameras ready as the waters will be riddled with huge pieces of ice emanating from the Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf.
You will not see so much ice, or ice so vast on the western side. It is time to feel dwarfed. The Antarctic Sound itself offers some great places to get ashore and stretch the legs. Brown Bluff takes its name from the towering red-brown tuff cliffs which are embedded with volcanic bombs. Adelie and gentoo penguins nest here, along with snow and pintado petrels and kelp gulls. Hope Bay might offer the chance to visit the Argentine Research Station, Esperanza. Note: Weather, ice and other mitigating factors may result in changes to our itinerary and alteration to certain shore excursions.

Meals Privided:
Breakfast, Dinner
A transfer from your hotel or town centre to the pier for embarkation on to the ship will take place at 4pm. Full details will be sent with your final joining instructions. Once onboard, our expedition team will welcome you and once you’ve settled in we’ll set sail from Ushuaia, charting our course through the Beagle Channel.
Day 3-4
Drake Passage
Meals Privided:
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
As we cross the Drake Passage, our team of experts will be out on deck to help us spot whales and identify seabirds. We also have the chance to take part in the onboard presentation series, preparing us for our adventure to the 'White Continent'. Talks on wildlife, ice and polar history will create enormous anticipation that continues to build as we cross the Antarctic Convergence. Here the cold waters of the Antarctic Ocean meet the warmer waters of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. We will also notice a sharp drop in temperature at this point. Huge icebergs loom up against the horizon and seabirds such as the wandering albatross and petrels are regularly sighted.
Day 5-7
South Shetland Islands and Antarctica
Meals Privided:
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Having braved the Drake, we arrive on the Antarctic Peninsula. We will start south and head north along the western coast of the Peninsula, and hope to visit sites such as the Melchiors, Wilhelmina Bay, Cuverville Island and Orne Harbour. We will cruise along glacial faces, visit penguin colonies and keep watch for humpback whales. The seals are plentiful and we are sure to encounter arguably the most formidable predator around the waters of Antarctica, the Leopard seal.
Day 8-10
Antarctic Sound & the Weddell Sea
Meals Privided:
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Having worked our way northwards we will be well situated to begin our passage through the Antarctic Sound. This stretch of water separates the western side of the Peninsula from the Weddell Sea. Have your cameras ready as the waters will be riddled with huge pieces of ice emanating from the Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf. Our on board team will educate you in all things ice and this is the place to come see it.
Once passage is made through the Sound we will find ourselves in Erebus and Terror Gulf. Here lies ice too large to enter the relative shelter of the sound. Zodiac cruising amongst it is almost other-worldly. The “true” feel of Antarctica is now embraced and we push southwards trying to reach Snow Hill Island. The wooden hut on Snow Hill Island is not ordinary refuge; it was built in February 1902 by the main party of the Swedish South Polar Expedition led by Otto Nordenskjöld. The hut contains original objects from the expedition, and functions as a living museum.
Whilst heading north again we may visit Paulet Island. The island is essentially a 350 meter high volcanic cone, a great chance for a hike. Over 200,000 pairs of Adelie penguins breed here, along with and blue-eyed shags, snowy sheathbills and kelp gulls. Fur seals and Weddell seals haul out regularly and leopard seals often hunt offshore.
Day 11
South Shetlands
Meals Privided:
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
The South Shetlands will be sure to add variety to your voyage as our time spent in Antarctica comes to a close. You will encounter the vegetation of Antarctica - tiny mosses, lichens and algae, whilst seabirds, seals and penguins also continue to occupy your camera lenses.
Day 12-13
Drake Passage to Ushuaia
Meals Privided:
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
As you cross the Drake on the way back to Ushuaia, our lecture program continues. Spend time on deck and on the bridge, taking in the magical feel of life on the high seas.
Day 14
Ushuaia
Meals Privided:
Breakfast
In the early morning we arrive back in Ushuaia, where our cruise ends. Passengers departing on flights before 12:00 noon will be transferred directly to the Ushuaia airport. If you are departing on later flights or plan to overnight in Ushuaia, transfers are on your own.
Transfers: If you are extending your stay and would like a transfer from Ushuaia to the airport please contact Peregrine or your agent.
